Expert Advice - Choosing a Carpet Style

Jim Aaron, our VP of Merchandising for Carpet One Floor & Home, shares some information on the different carpet styles that are available.

Types of Carpet

From stain management to heavy traffic, most common flooring challenges can be solved with the right carpeting. Today there are thousands of carpet varieties to choose from, so it’s important to be well-versed in carpeting terminology as you navigate the market.

Usually referred to as “pile,” carpet fibers will play a vital role in your rug’s performance rating, density, texture, and aesthetics. For a carpet that’s extremely durable yet soft, for example, polyester or nylon pile is recommended. On the other hand, if you suffer from allergies, natural wool fibers are a great option since they can trap dust particles.

Here are the basics on all the different carpet types:

Frieze or “shag” carpeting is extremely trendy, with its soft and twisted pile. It works great in dens and other casual rooms.

Level Loop carpeting is a great all-around carpet since its dense, short pile can take on tons of traffic.

Patterned carpeting is a stunning addition to a formal room, with its intricate patterns formed by looped pile of alternating heights.

Textured carpeting is a nice touch for casual family rooms or finished basements. With its rougher pile, textured carpeting is very durable.

Plush carpeting adds a luxurious touch to formal living rooms, with its soft and velvet-like pile.
