Expert Advice - Hardwood Styles

Join our very own Jim Aaron, VP of Merchandising for Carpet One Floor & Home, for some information on the all the different looks and style available in hardwood floors.

Types of Hardwood Flooring

Selecting hardwood is a process in itself, but with our Select-A-Floor™ flooring guide we make it easy. Choose from solid or engineered hardwood, exotic or traditional, even choose the color and plank width. You can truly make hardwood flooring custom to your home that fits your lifestyle and personal style.

Hardwood flooring is a naturally beautiful and durable flooring solution for your home. Hardwood floors are designed to last for years in your home when properly cared for. As your local flooring retailer we stay on top of the latest hardwood flooring trends.

Solid vs engineered hardwood

Solid hardwood is, just as its name describes, one solid piece of wood from top to bottom. Plank thickness can vary, but on average they are about ¾” thick. The thickness of the plank plays a role in whether it can be sanded and refinished down the road. Engineered hardwood floors are made of multiple real wood veneers whose grains run in different directions in order to increase stability. This stability also means that planks are less likely to react to moisture.

Where to Install Hardwood

To ensure your hardwood floors last their intended life cycle, it is important to know where and where you cannot install hardwood flooring around your home. For example, solid hardwood can only be installed in, on, and above ground rooms like bedrooms, living rooms, and dining rooms. Due to its simple construction it is not build to handle heavy foot traffic. Engineered hardwood flooring can be installed in kitchens, hallways and even basements due to its durable construction.

Hardwood should not be installed in places with a lot of moisture and humidity like bathrooms and laundry rooms.
