Hardwood Styles

There are many different hardwood styles available today, from traditional options like maple, oak, and walnut to exotics like bamboo and cork. Hardwood planks come in a variety of lengths and widths, with extra wide planks being especially trendy at the moment. Hardwood planks can come prefinished or unfinished. You’ll find varying shine levels, from matte to glossy, as well as stunning textures that are created through wire brushing and hand scraping. You can truly make hardwood flooring custom to your home, whether you love a cozy rustic dark wood or an airy light wood floor.

Solid vs Engineered Hardwood

Solid hardwood is, just as its name describes, one solid piece of wood from top to bottom. Plank thickness can vary, but on average they are about ¾” thick. The thickness of the plank plays a role in whether it can be sanded and refinished down the road. On average, solid wood floors can be refinished up to seven times, and this is enough for them to last the life of your home. Engineered hardwood floors are made of multiple layers of composite wood, which are laminated together in a cross grain direction. This makes the planks less likely to warp from foot-traffic and humidity. At the surface of each engineered plank is a real wood veneer, which is why hardwood and solid wood floors look identical from above. You may be able to refinish this veneer a few times, depending on how thick it is.

Where Can Hardwood Flooring Be Installed?

Solid wood floors are recommended for dry rooms that are on or above grade. Due to their simple construction, they are not built to handle heavy foot traffic. Engineered hardwood flooring can be installed in busy living spaces, hallways, and even basements due to its durable design. Hardwood should not be installed in places with a lot of moisture and humidity like bathrooms, unless you’re using our Hydrotek™ H20 Waterproof Hardwood products.
